Apple’s iPad Mini 8 May Feature OLED, A20 Pro Chip
Apple may be preparing its biggest iPad mini upgrade in years. The iPad mini 8 is expected to arrive as early as October, featuring an OLED display, a newer Pro chip, and several design changes. The OLED panel represents the most significant visual upgrade, while the chip could offer substantial performance improvements.
Moving from LCD to OLED technology would bring deeper blacks, better contrast, and richer colors to the small tablet. Such improvements would enhance the experience for watching movies and editing photos, making the device more appealing for media consumption. However, the refresh rate remains uncertain, with some reports suggesting it might stay at 60Hz while others speculate about ProMotion support up to 120Hz.
The current iPad mini uses the A17 Pro chip, and the next model should see a significant upgrade. Recent leaks point to the A20 Pro, though earlier reports had mentioned the A19 Pro.
Both chips would provide a clear performance boost over the existing model. The A20 Pro rumor is notable because the chip is also expected to power Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro models, though this has not been confirmed.
Apple may also improve water resistance with a redesigned body. The company is reportedly testing a more water-resistant casing by incorporating a vibration-based speaker system that eliminates traditional speaker holes.
The front camera could shift to the side edge, aligning with newer iPad designs. Such design changes, while subtle, could enhance daily usability.
The current iPad mini starts at $599 in the U.S., following a recent price increase from $499. An OLED panel and newer Pro chip could push the iPad mini 8 to a higher price point, though no confirmed pricing exists yet. If launched in October, details should emerge soon.
Historically, major iPad mini redesigns have been infrequent, with each generation focusing on incremental updates rather than transformative changes. The introduction of OLED and a new Pro chip would mark a departure from this pattern, potentially positioning the device as a more compelling alternative to larger iPads.
