In‑car messaging gets voice playback and call history

The updated CarPlay and Android Auto interface now lets users listen to incoming voice messages while driving. Users can also respond with voice commands, a step up from the earlier version that only allowed sending new messages and making calls.

According to the report, the redesign adds a call‑history screen showing missed calls, and a favorites list for quicker access to frequent contacts. The feature works when a phone is linked to the vehicle’s system and WhatsApp is opened from the car’s display.

Lifehacker noted that prior to the change, the in‑car experience lagged behind competing messaging apps, which already supported playback of received messages. The new capabilities bring the service closer to parity with those rivals.

PDF viewing and editing on desktop and web

WhatsApp now permits users to open PDF files directly within its web and desktop clients. After opening a document, users can highlight text, add annotations, and make other edits without first downloading the file.

The functionality relies on an integration with Adobe Acrobat, the filing states. This capability is limited to the desktop and web versions; mobile apps on iOS and Android still require users to download PDFs before opening them.

For people who receive contracts or reports via chat, the ability to edit PDFs in‑place could reduce steps and keep the workflow inside the messaging platform.

Music sharing to Status and iPad‑only accounts

WhatsApp Status now supports sharing tracks from Apple Music and Spotify. When a user selects the share option in either music app, WhatsApp appears as a target, and contacts can tap the shared item to open the song in the original service.

In May 2025, the company released a dedicated iPad app. The latest update removes the requirement for a phone number during sign‑up, allowing users whose primary device is an iPad to create a new account directly on the tablet.

WhatsApp has not disclosed how account recovery or multi‑device linking will work for those accounts that start without a phone number.

The rollout of these features began this week, but availability may vary by platform and region. Users should update the app through the App Store, Google Play, or the desktop and web clients to access the new options.

For in‑car use, the phone must be connected to CarPlay or Android Auto, after which WhatsApp can be opened from the vehicle’s interface to use message playback, view call history, and reach favorite contacts.
