Google renames NotebookLM and boosts AI cloud access

Google is rebranding its AI research tool NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook, aligning the product with its broader Gemini AI platform while keeping its core functionality the same.

The update involves only a new name and logo. Existing notebooks will stay unchanged, and users won’t need to take any steps. This change supports Google’s effort to unify its AI offerings under the Gemini brand, which already includes the Gemini app and Gemini Live.

The transition won’t disrupt workflows. The tool, first introduced as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023, now serves over 30 million users. It allows users to organize sources and ask questions about uploaded documents.

Over the past year, Google has added Gemini’s capabilities to the tool. The rebrand makes this connection official, simplifying access through the Gemini app. A new, colorful logo will replace the current branding across web and mobile interfaces in the coming weeks.

For most users, the change will be minor. The interface, features, and performance remain unchanged.

The more important update is the expansion of a secure cloud-based computing feature. Previously available only to AI Ultra and Workspace business customers, it will soon reach all AI Pro subscribers on the web.

This cloud computer lets Gemini Notebook write and execute code for users. It handles data analysis, complex calculations, and advanced research tasks without relying on local device resources. Google introduced the feature in June as a way to shift heavy computing work to its servers.

The rollout to AI Pro subscribers will occur over the next few weeks, though no exact timeline has been shared. Once live, users can access it directly through the interface. Free-tier users won’t get the cloud computer but will keep the core features they’ve used before.

This expansion shows Google is testing how far it can extend AI-assisted research tools into paid tiers. The cloud computer’s ability to run code on its own could be useful for users who need scalable power without managing their own infrastructure.

Google plans to embed Gemini Notebook deeper into its products. It’s already part of the Gemini app, and the company is working to add it to AI Mode in Search. That would let users start notebook-style research directly from search results, making workflows easier for students, journalists, and professionals.

No timeline has been set for the Search integration, though Google has called it a priority. The rebrand and cloud computer expansion will happen over the coming weeks.

The move to unify AI tools under Gemini reflects Google’s broader strategy. The brand now covers Search, Workspace, Chrome, and Android, positioning Gemini as the default AI layer across its ecosystem. The rebrand of NotebookLM brings a specialized research tool into a larger platform.

Users can expect a smooth transition. The name change is the most obvious shift, but the real test will be how well the cloud computer performs once it reaches more people. If it works as promised, it could become a key feature for Google’s paid AI plans.
