Apple has launched a budget-friendly repair service for the iPhone Duo, enabling customers to replace the foldable inner screen’s nano-texture cover layer for just $19.99 when paired with AppleCare+. The initiative, accessible exclusively through Apple Stores or authorized service providers, focuses on addressing gradual wear, such as increased crease visibility or surface deterioration, rather than full inner display failure.
The replaceable layer sits atop the actual foldable display, which features over 10 ultra-thin layers and a proprietary nano-texture coating engineered to minimize reflections. Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, confirmed the layer is designed for longevity but can be swapped out to preserve the device’s appearance without requiring a complete panel replacement.
Unlike standard screen protectors, users cannot install or remove the layer themselves due to the foldable display’s detailed design. The 7.6-inch OLED inner panel supports 120Hz ProMotion and delivers 3,000-nit peak brightness, but its delicate construction demands professional handling. While Apple has not revealed the standalone cost of replacing the layer without AppleCare+, the plan already covers other repairs, including accidental damage for $99 and full display replacement for $99.
This $19.99 option provides owners with a cost-effective way to prolong the phone’s usability without incurring the higher expense of a full screen overhaul. Foldable displays, though innovative, remain susceptible to wear over time, and this solution may help mitigate long-term maintenance costs.
