Ride-hailing company Bolt is calling for dialogue with the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) ahead of an October 12 indefinite strike. The company aims to address concerns raised by the union regarding driver earnings, operating costs, platform charges, transparency, and welfare.

Bolt Acknowledges Driver Concerns

In a statement, Bolt acknowledged the economic pressures faced by drivers. Weyinmi Aghadiuno, Bolt’s Head of Regulatory and Policy in Africa, emphasized the importance of drivers in the ride-hailing ecosystem. She stated, We take the concerns being raised seriously and believe the best way forward is through constructive, open, and solution-oriented engagement.

The company expressed its commitment to building a sustainable ecosystem where drivers, passengers, and platforms can thrive. Bolt plans to engage AUATON and driver representatives in a roundtable discussion early next week to address concerns and explore collaboration opportunities.

AUATON’s Planned Shutdown

AUATON has declared an indefinite strike, starting October 12, which will shut down the Bolt and inDrive apps in Lagos. The union aims to highlight the plight of e-hailing drivers and bring the app companies to the negotiation table. Rising operational costs, vehicle financing obligations, fuel expenses, maintenance costs, insurance, data subscriptions, government levies, and other daily expenses have placed significant financial pressure on drivers.

The union demands a fare review that reflects the prevailing economic realities and the actual cost of operating a vehicle, as well as a substantial reduction in commissions with a target of not more than 10 per cent, which will be subject to negotiations and a transparent explanation of any additional charges or deductions.

Bolt’s Response and Commitment

While acknowledging the drivers’ concerns, Bolt believes that meaningful progress can be achieved through open communication and mutual understanding. The company encourages drivers to continue providing services to passengers while discussions are ongoing. Bolt remains committed to its driver community and to strengthening the partnership that supports mobility across Lagos.
