Nigeria’s largest telecom provider, MTN Nigeria, has acknowledged widespread service interruptions impacting voice and data connections in multiple regions, such as Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The company’s official statement, posted on X (formerly Twitter) through its customer support account late Thursday, warned that affected users might face intermittent service failures. “We’re experiencing network challenges in some parts of Oyo, Lagos, Rivers, FCT and Delta States and our services may be temporarily unavailable as a result,” the company stated in the official announcement.

Engineers are working to restore services, but the company did not specify a timeline for full resolution. Prior to this update, subscribers across the affected states reported difficulties making voice calls, sending text messages, and accessing mobile data services.

FibreX and other services down

In a separate response to subscribers under the post, MTN Nigeria also confirmed that its Broadband internet services, FibreX, is also down across multiple locations. “We are experiencing a general service downtime affecting our FibreX network. This is receiving urgent attention from our support team,” it said in an X reply to customer complaints.

Subscribers are facing more than just lost connectivity; digital businesses and gig workers relying on mobile data for order processing and service delivery have seen their output stall. Another specific issue involves expiring bundles, as active hourly or daily internet data packages continue to count down and expire even while services remain unavailable. The compensation policy introduced after recent service failures offers a form of redress, but eligibility depends on being located in a specific Local Government Area where service deficiencies were identified.

While the NCC directive mandates compensation for those in qualifying areas, not every affected user is eligible. Screenshots across social media show varying credit amounts, with some customers receiving as low as ₦20 and others up to ₦1,436. The SMS notification to eligible users reads: “In line with NCC Directive, your account was credited earlier today with ₦xxxx airtime for network Quality of Service deficiencies identified in February, March, and April 2026. Thank you.”

Airtime Compensation and Eligibility Requirements

MTN rolled out airtime credits days after service interruptions began. Customers in specific Local Government Areas receive varying amounts through SMS notifications.
